From parking permits to social assistance applications: municipalities send thousands of messages to citizens every day. This happens through hundreds of different systems, each with its own style and method. The Municipality of The Hague decided that things had to change and was one of the first municipalities to implement NotifyNL: an open-source notification component that ensures uniform, reliable communication with residents and businesses. Vincent van Beek, Chief Product Owner of the Service Platform at the Municipality of The Hague, says: “With NotifyNL, you have access to a global open-source facility for notifying your residents and entrepreneurs, with guaranteed ongoing development.”

Proven technology

NotifyNL is built on Notify UK, a proven technology from the United Kingdom through which 7 billion messages have already been delivered. The strength of NotifyNL lies in its simplicity: the system integrates with existing municipal processes and ensures that all communication follows standardized templates. Whereas previously each system had its own way of sending messages, there is now a single central location that streamlines all outgoing communication (output management).

Proactive service as expected

In addition to efficiency and uniformity, NotifyNL primarily ensures that residents are informed about important information or developments within the municipality. “There is greater transparency between the civil servant simply doing their job and informing the resident,” Vincent explains. “That means residents are much more aware of what’s happening within their municipality.”

Vincent cites postal companies as an example: “You’re used to receiving a message from a delivery service when your package is on its way and roughly when it will arrive at your doorstep.” With NotifyNL, municipalities can now offer that same level of transparency. Instead of being left in the dark after submitting a request, residents are proactively kept informed about their status in the process. Think of notifications like: ‘We have received your application,’ ‘Reminder: you have a task or message waiting in your personal portal,’ or ‘A decision has been made on your application.’
